Having been pleased with the results of a small, experimental, “bird’s-eye view” painting, I decided to do a larger work with one large bird and a more complex landscape. The result was Pilgrim, featuring a grey heron flying high over a medieval monastery.

My imaginary Cistercian abbey is located in France (perhaps the Loire Valley) and the following areas can be seen: an older Romanesque church on the right, and a newer Gothic chapel on the left connected to a dormitory and cloisters; a pilgrim’s dormitory to the right of the chapel and a small, elaborate chapel in it’s own wall at the top left-perhaps containing saints’ relics and the destination of pilgrims; formal gardens, orchards, and an enclosing wall complete the establishment.
