Napoleon I

Portrait of Napoleon the I on primed canvas after J. L. David's Alps scene painting

Oil on Canvas

This painting (with some white charcoal pencil) is a study made from Jacques Louis David’s famous painting of Napoleon crossing the Alps to Italy on horseback in 1800, the action that led to the Battle of Marengo. I concentrated on the head of Napoleon for my study and began by drawing the light areas of the face with white charcoal and slowly introducing the paint. Before I was finished, I had drawn, brushed, and rubbed various areas several times until I had an image that I thought conveyed the dynamism of David’s Napoleon with a contemporary feel and without losing a certain “antique” quality.
